Google, Amazon, and Zara are among the top gainers in BusinessWeek and Interbrand’s annual ranking of the “Best Global Brands.” UBS slipped dramatically down the list, falling 31 places to No. 72, losing 50% of its brand value. Coca-Cola remains the No. 1 brand for the ninth year in a row.

For the ninth consecutive year, BusinessWeek teamed up with Interbrand, a leading brand consultancy, to publish the ranking of the top 100 global brands by brand value. Amazon, Pepsi, Audi, Panasonic, and Campbell’s have all prospered during a challenging year for marketing executives. For the first time, the overall value of the top 100 brands has declined 4.6%, or US $55.472 billion. Seven brands, however, fell right off the list. Among the biggest: Merrill Lynch, which ranked No. 34 last year, and AIG, previously No. 54, after both required
emergency assistance from the U.S. government. ING, ranked No. 86 last year, also fell off the list after huge subprime losses. Not surprisingly, big banks and auto brands fared the worst, while food brands benefited as consumers began eating more at home. View the full list of 100 Best Global Brands on BusinessWeek.com. The top ten list includes four sites that rely, for the most part or in whole, on user-generated content, the biggest online trend advertisers currently face. Adweek reviewed data on approximately 400 sites from Nielsen/NetRatings AdRelevance. They looked for growth over the past six months in unique users or time spent per person, and also invited several interactive media directors and clients to weigh in, giving their thoughts on which sites they believe are doing it right. The final list mirrors what is happening on the Web: community sites mix with traditional media properties. Some of the oldest sites stand side-by-side with the newest. For the sixth consecutive year, BusinessWeek has teamed up with Interbrand, a leading brand consultancy, to publish a ranking of the top 100 global brands by brand value. The Best Global Brands ranking measures an elusive but crucial quality. Every company wants its brand to get bigger. The hard part is balancing what the brand already is with a vision of what it would like to be.

Brand value is calculated as the net present value of the earnings that the brand is expected to generate and secure in the future for the time frame from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006. In order to be included in the top global brands list, a brand must have a minimum brand value of $2.7 billion, achieve about one third of their earnings outside of their home country, have publicly available marketing and financial data, and have a wider public profile beyond their direct customer base.

Business 2.0 screened more than 2,000 tech companies that have been publicly traded on a U.S. stock exchange for at least three years, have a market capitalization of at least $50 million, and have had positive operating cash flow over the past 12 months. The resulting list was ranked using four financial criteria: growth in revenue, profit, and operating cash flow during the past three years, and the 12-month stock return as of Dec. 31, 2005. Cash flow growth counts for 40% of a company’s ranking. Each of the other criteria counts for 20%. View the full list…

BusinessWeek uses 10 performance metrics, starting with sales and earnings growth. They tally both for the most recent 12-month and three-year periods, to reward companies that can prosper over time. As a gauge of how well management deploys its resources, BW factors in net profit margins and return on equity. And finally they account for the market’s view, by measuring total shareholder returns for one- and three-year periods.

BusinessWeek also weighs the results for sales volume, because it’s harder for large companies to post impressive revenue- and profit-growth figures. And BW factors in the debt-to-capital ratio, to recognize clean balance sheets. That also makes it harder for corporations to qualify with growth that’s primarily the result of debt-laden acquisitions.
